Waclaw Zimpel – Fen

On 25 June, 2021, 7K! Records release the latest edition in their compilation series ‘Layers’. Wind Layers focusses on wind instruments and their influence on the contemporary classical multiverse, with musical creations that delicately balance acoustic expression, electronic refractions and ambient recall.

The second song from the compilation, ‘Fen’ was written and recorded by Waclaw Zimpel.

Fen is an improvisation for alto clarinet and numerous tape delays. The piece focuses on the specific noise of the clarinet, which is often treated as a messy side effect of the classical clarinet sound. For me it is what is most interesting about its sound. This noisy sound reminds me that the clarinet comes from nature, from the earth.” – Waclaw Zimpel

Waclaw Zimpel is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer of rare distinction. Inspired as much by jazz as he is by electronics, minimalism and roots music from across the world, Wacław Zimpel doesn’t so much blur boundaries as eradicate them altogether to create a whole new musical language. He is a classically educated clarinetist mostly playing his beloved and very rare alto clarinet but his mastery of other woodwind instruments including khaen – a proto-harmonica from Laos – has also reached world-class levels
